Cultivate Radically Empathetic Therapists

Decolonize understanding of mental health Field

Integrate Medical Competency with Psychotherapy

Empower Innate Healing Instincts in Supervisees

  • Cultivate radically empathetic therapists: this is my version of "cultural competency" because those words just don't do it for me. We are extremely privileged in our role as therapists to sit with clients in their pain, their trauma and their stories. If you are not radically empathetic to where they've been, what they believe and who they are then you are abusing that privilege. We are not here to judge others for their beliefs or the way in which they exist in the world. We are here to help them become the version of themselves that best thrives in the world.
  • Decolonize understanding of the mental health field: If you do not fundamentally understand that we are operating within a racist and patriarchal system when working as a therapist in the United States, then you are going to cause harm to your clients that are consistently harmed by these systems, and just a hint: everyone is harmed by these systems.
  • Integrate medical competency with psychotherapy: we are working with clients that have been attempting to treat their mental. health with medications for years, if you do not have a basic understanding of the pharmaceuticals that they are taking, how they work, what side effects look like, etc then you could easily misdiagnose someone. In order to be a competent therapist we must understand the intersections of our field with the others that we frequently encounter.
  • Empower the innate healing instincts of supervisees: I hold the belief that we are called to be therapists because we have been "therapists" the majority of our lives and grad school merely gave us the paper and some of the language to better hone our skills. You have innate instincts inside you that will heal others if you listen to them. It is my job as a supervisor to help you hear them clearly and have the confidence to follow through.
